Become a Volunteer (More Info)

Many of our volunteers are everyday citizens like yourselves who want to help underserved communities with their income tax preparation.  You don't have to be a tax expert or in the accounting field.  As long has you have the desire help people and an aptitude for numbers then being a VITA participant can be rewarding in many ways, including:

  • Tax Preparer

  • Greeter

  • Screener

  • Interpreter

  • Transmitter

The benefits are rewarding and real.  Not only can you give back to your community, but you will also be fully trained with valuable skills that can be applied to your personal life and development. Visit our county volunteer coordinators for more information on how to apply.

Volunteer Traits

Vita volunteers come from varied business and non-business backgrounds.  Essential traits of a volunteer tax assistor include being good with numbers and an interest in validating basic financial information to properly assist taxpayers in accurately reporting their tax return.  Other skills include good people interviewing skills, and familiarity with computers and basic tax software. Most importantly, a good volunteer displays patience, remembering that those he/she is helping, many times find tax law confusing or too complex.
